Too many pictures?

I’m finally back from Vietnam after an absolutely amazing trip and a great assignment. I spent almost a month taking pictures in the Mekong Delta and I think that I got some very nice pictures (the people at GIZ who hired me certainly seem to think so). But I also have a gigantic mountain of photos on my harddrives now (always at least 2 harddrives in case one fails!).

I started trying to edit and select them even while I was still traveling (evenings alone in slightly dingy hotel rooms somewhere at the far end of the world are great for that), throwing away tens of GBs of photos but the amount of photos and data is still staggering, which makes me wonder if I need to change my shooting habits and shoot less or if by doing so I might miss great shots. What do you think?
